SCA First Fridays: Erasing Knowledge: Fighting Censorship at Cal Poly SLO & Maritime

At this Labor, Advocacy & Public Policy Committee First Friday, librarians and archivists from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Cal Maritime will discuss administrative censorship of their library research guides. Triggered by external political objections to a guide concerning student activism, the CSU SLO administration without warning removed, deleted and denied access to all research guides to the public as well as their creators. This discussion will address leveraging unions to protect intellectual freedom and creating transparent policies to effectively navigate internal and external challenges to library materials.
Speakers:
Kyle Tanaka is the Student Success and Outcomes Librarian at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. He holds an MA and PhD in Philosophy, and his work and research concerns the ways diverse forms of knowledge, experience, and perspectives are connected and made discoverable.
Kitty Luce is the Instruction and Web Services Librarian and AL$ Co-Coordinator at Cal Poly Maritime Academy. She is Co-Chair of the California Faculty Association’s Librarian Committee.
