Constructing Archival Authorities: Describing Archives: A Content Standard Part II

Wednesday, April 24th, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Long Beach Hilton, Second Floor, Room: Pacific I

Instructor:

Sue Luftschein is the Head of Special Collections in the USC Libraries, where she oversees a department that houses rare books, manuscripts, and archives. Since joining the USC Libraries in 2009, she has played a leading role in helping to improve the care of and public access to USC’s unique archival collections.

Workshop description:

Archival authorities (creator name records) are becoming an increasingly important part of archival description. With the advent of Social Networks and Archival Context (SNAC), EAC-CPF, and linked open data, properly constructed authority records allow researchers to find information and make connections about archival creators and their materials in new and exciting ways. This workshop will teach participants how to construct authority records according to DACS, and will provide an opportunity to learn more about authority records and why they are important to the work that we do as archivists, and some tools for implementing these authority records in their day to day archival description practices.

At the end of this full day workshop, participants will be able to recognize the importance of authority control in archival description and its relationship to resource discovery and use; incorporate DACS Part II elements into an archival description workflow; identify and employ DACS Part II elements in constructing an archival authority record for a creator of archival materials; and create both minimum and added-value archival authority records for a records creator represented in their repository.

Note to participants: You will be required to view 6 short (5-7 minutes) videos in advance of the workshop. Attendees are also required to bring their own laptops to the workshop.

This workshop is being presented with the permission of the Society of American Archivists. It is currently under consideration by SAA for its Arrangement and Description certificate program. Attendance at the workshop will not give participants credit for the forthcoming SAA course.

The workshop is limited to 25 participants so please register as soon as possible to secure your spot.

The Walter P. Gray III Education Endowment Fund Scholarship offers funds up to $500 for registration and travel to SCA workshops. Submit an application form, including a proposed budget to Jennifer Martinez Wormser (jmwormse@scrippscollege.edu). Application forms and additional information are available here.
