Get Hands-On: An Introduction to Making Special Collections Instruction a Rich and Transformative Learning Experience

Instructor:
Michaela Ullmann is USC Libraries’ Exile Studies Librarian and oversees the Feuchtwanger Memorial Library and its related archival collections. She has been at USC since 2006 and has a Master’s Degree in Cultural Anthropology and Archaeology from the University of Bonn (Germany), and a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from San José State University. In addition to her duties as Exile Studies Librarian, she also leads the Special Collections’ instruction program at USC which sees about 40 classes a semester. She collaborates with teaching faculty and colleagues to integrate Special Collections materials into USC courses and develops both in-class activities and assignments that teach students practical research and critical thinking skills. She also plays a leading role in designing innovative tools for student engagement with USC’s unique collections.
